Immigration scholarship agrees that the concentrated settlement of immigrants often leads to the establishment of an ethnic enclave, where immigrants cooperate with one another against the host society’s hostility. However, the scholarly image of cohesive enclave often ignores the larger contexts that may influence the internal dynamics of the community. Korean‐Chinese immigrants in South Korea have formed one of the largest immigrant regional communities in Seoul, the capital of Korea; however, little attention has been given to whether this immigrant community of Daerim maintain mutual trust and cooperation in face of the marginalized institutional arrangements associated with the group. Drawing upon in‐depth interview data from 58 Korean‐Chinese immigrants in Korea, this study examines how the experienced community by coethnic immigrants is susceptible to sociopolitical institutions of the host society. Our findings reveal that the ethnic enclave promotes the exchange of instrumental and expressive resources among immigrants. Yet, the Korean government’s selective inclusion politics towards Korean‐Chinese immigrants lead them to resonate negative attitudes toward their enclave as South Korean natives do and ultimately contribute to degenerating cohesion among ethnic members. These findings suggest that the interpersonal dynamics within enclaves are strongly influenced by the host society’s formal or informal practices.
