The purpose of this study is to examine pragmatic effects of polite expressions for requests by experimental methods. First, the psychological parameters, such as the degree of imposition and the level of displeasure, for 187 request utterances have been surveyed in a preliminary study. The politeness of utterances has been manipulated by two Korean honorific verb endings, Hay-style (less polite) or Hayyo-style (polite). Second, the acceptability of the request and the change of favorability of the speaker as indices of pragmatic effect of polite expressions have been examined in the main experiment. Results show that the acceptability of the requests and favorability toward the speakers increases if the request is expressed politely using Hayyo-style. Interestingly, the effect of polite expression is bigger if the imposition of request is low. Current results demonstrate that the polite expressions with Korean honorifics is pragmatically effective for the request.
