In this paper, I present a clinical approach to philosophical practice. In such an approach, a philosophical concept or idea functions as a diagnosis in philosophical consultations. It serves as a classification and philosophical description of a problem, question or theme on the one hand and provides a lesson in terms of a new way to look at one self and/or situations on the other hand. A philosophical diagnosis distinguishes the philosophical consultation from psychotherapy. It is important for philosophical practice to make such diagnoses explicit and construct a kind of guidebook like the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM). Such a guidebook would enhance the exchange of information among philosophical consultants, serve teaching purposes, make the consultation practice more explicit to clients and third parties, and eventually contribute to the development of philosophical practice as a discipline in consultancy and coaching.
