This paper focuses on roughly three things about Silas Marner ― Eppie’s naturalist-education based on Romanticism, Marner’s inward metamorphosis and social adaptation through raising her and its encompassing vision of pastoral utopia in George Eliot’s humanism. Chapter 14 of the novel is mostly about how Marner raises Eppie with his true affection and nature as her play-mate. Eppie grows up in the middle of wild nature until she becomes an independent, marvellous lady, not distinguishable from any lady from the gentry class, which she biologically belongs to. Marner, as well, undergoes, through her presence, a gradual and drastic change from his former self and gets naturally assimilated into the communal good. In this paper the wedding scene and the garden-image in the last part are also explained in detail as important signifiers of pastoral utopia and class-integration.
