.This study was conducted to know the changes of hair growth relevant factors including enzyme activity and cytokine expression by topical application of sandalwood oil to C57BL/6 mice. C57BL/6 mice were randomized into three groups consisting of normal group (N: saline), positive control group (PC: 3% minoxidil), and experimental group (E: 3% Sandalwood oil). Sandalwood oil(SO) was topically applied to the backs of mice with 100μL a day, once a day, 5 days a week, for 4 weeks, and the changes of hair growth relevant factors in mice skin were observed during 16 weeks. The alkaline phosphatase(ALP) activity in the PC and E groups was significantly higher(p⁄0.001) than that of the N group. The mRNA expression of hair growth promoting factors including prolactin(PRL) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in the PC and E groups significantly(p⁄0.001) increased, compared to the N group. The mRNA expression of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), hair growth inhibitory factor, in the PC and E groups was significantly decreased(p⁄0.001), compared to the N group. These results suggest that changes in values of growth related factors including ALP activity and mRNA expression of PRL, VEGF, and TGF-β1 are useful markers to represent the hair growth cycle.
