This study was conducted to propose the necessity of the guideline including contraindications of Hydrotherapy in SPAs. Hydrotherapy is not only the application of water, but also how the body reacts to the thermic application and it is a simple yet powerful technique that may render consequences. Alongside the advantages, general contraindications are those that signal the therapist to use caution, or avoid all together, when applying hydrotherapy. Although a number of researchers have investigated the relationship between SPA and health, they have mainly been concerned with the good effects and benefits. For this study, twenty four references related to effects and contraindications regarding hydrotherapy effects and contraindications were investigated. For the guideline analysis and the indications of hydrotherapy, we also investigated four types of references' criteria including the clinical practice guidelines published by the French National Authority for Health (HAS) and the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) in this study. To execute the most effective and safe hydrotherapy treatments, it is important to prepare and emphasize the guideline and contraindications in SPAs. This study is targeted to therapists of SPA industry and the focus of this investigation will be on the external use of cold and hot treatments applications to aid or assist the body's natural healing process. In conclusion, we suggest that guideline will be utilized in the respect of SPA industry, as the fundamental reference in predicting good effects and contraindications of hydrotherapy in Korean SPAs.
