This paper reveals how J. & P. Coats, the British cotton thread making company, did business in Brazil before 1945. The company implemented 21 direct investments for six Latin American countries before 1945 and Brazil was the largest recipient, explaining more than a third of the total investments, followed by Mexico and Argentina. For Brazil, J. & P. Coats carried out two investments in order to secure bases first for sale and then for manufacture before 1914. After 1914 through the 1920s, the company became involved in the cultivation of raw cotton and participated in a joint venture to manufacture silk thread. The decade of the 1930s saw the company implement a total of four new investments for local production. The increasing size of population and the rising level of income appear to have enabled J. & P. Coats’s Brazilian businesses to obtain better results. The new evidence, drawn from the company’s internal documents for the first time, shows how actively a major British manufacturing company created business interests in Brazil. It is believed that the evidence will fill, to some extent, a long-standing gap in the study of history of British businesses in Latin America, which has mainly concerned the primary/tertiary sectors.
