This study examines the educational methods of the Hitler Youth(Hitlerjugend), a youth organization of Nazi Germany. The educational purpose of the Hitler Youth was to inculcate the German youth with Nazi values, worldview, and racial beliefs. Specifically, the objectives of this study are to examine Hitler’s educational ideals; the inception and growth of the Hitler Youth; the characteristics of the Hitler Youth curriculum; and implications of Hitler Youth educational methods for our society. Hitler’s National Socialist(Nazi) worldview can be broken down into the view of the Germans as a master race, racism, antisemitism, pan-German expansionism, and anti-parliamentarianism. Hitler’s worldview was directly applied to his educational ideals, characterized as “inculcating the supremacy of the German Aryan race” through the Nazi worldview and history education, “fostering strong and vigorous individuals” through physical education and military training, and “strengthening community awareness” through character education. Hitler Youth educational policies centered on education through peer leaders, integrative education, standardized manuals, the intensive use of mass media, and performance assessment. As the main problems of the Hitler Youth education, this study proposes racial superiority ideology, hatred education, and excessive nationalist zeal suppressing independent and creative thinking. The systematic indoctrination of children and adolescents, who have not yet built their own system of thought, with hatred-based education to arouse anger directed towards other races is obviously a serious violation of human rights and abuse of minors by tacitly encouraging them to participate in crimes of the state. It is necessary to remain vigilant against the uncritical inclusion of excessive nationalism and chauvinism in school curricula. It is also of vital importance to foster the cognitive abilities required for unbiased judgement from a balanced and critical perspective in our constantly changing political landscape.
