Australian multiculturalism has affected the nature of the Korean ethnic community as well as the economic efficiency, social solidarity and identity formation of Australian society. This paper aims to explore the nature of Australian multiculturalism and to investigate how Korean ethnic organizations in Sydney and Melbourne have perceived the policy and how it has facilitated their cultural and social activities. Since the Australian government's adoption of multiculturalism in 1973, the formal definition of the policy has changed several times in accordance with national interests. Australian multiculturalism has confronted some problems resulting from the ambiguity of its concept and tensions between settlement and recruitment policies. Many Korean Australians believe that the policy fosters the maintenance of their cultural heritage in the Anglo-Celtic dominant society, and thus enhances their self-respect and dignity. They tend to be happy with programs and services provided by the policy. There is also little doubt that Australian governments have partly contributed to the development of the Korean community by providing Korean ethnic organizations with monetary and other support. The policy, which has developed around a cultural version, however, tends to have encouraged the separate cultural development of the Korean community, whereas it has had little effect on its socio-structural improvement. The policy would appear to lack relevance with the increase in number of second and third generation Korean Australians who are more concerned with life chances than lifestyles. It seems that, if ethnic background continues to be a main criterion for the practice of the policy, Korean community organizations will arm themselves with a stronger political tone so as to gain more benefits from the Australian governments. Multiculturalism in a real sense, it is believed, will be achieved by the recognition of the equal access to life chances as well as diverse lifestyles.
