Capillary-driven heat pipes and vapor chambers are widely used in cooling systems of electronic devices to effectively transfer or spread heat by means of flow and latent heat of the working fluid. Recently, the performance of electronic components are getting higher, and more effective cooling systems are needed [1-3]. This work describes a new concept of heat management medium, named three-state composite (3SC). It consists of a metal foam core of open cell type, a continuous thin foil enveloping the core, and working fluid filling the interior pores. The thin-foil envelope is firmly attached to the foam core via metallic bonding with many ridges composing the foam. Thus, the 3SC can resist the vacuum and pressure set in the interior. The interior space is homogeneous and fully filled with the metal foam. The ridges’ surfaces of the foam are chemically treated to be hydrophilic so that the open cells’ pores can pass the working fluid both in liquid and gas states. As result, the state and flow pattern of the working fluid are self-determined depending on the amount and location of heat source(s).
