Objective: The purpose of this study was to experimentally determine whether taking a working image acts as a Hawthorne effect to reduce human errors.
Background: Most of the accidents are caused by human errors, so automatically control critical facility to prevent human errors. However, the dominant research is that automatically control systems alone cannot completely prevent human errors. Therefore, in this study, an experiment was conducted with power plant operators to determine whether the disposition that induces the Hawthorne effect reduces Human Errors.
Method: Prior to the experiment using an action CAM, a literature survey on human error and a questionnaire survey of PSM (Process Safety Management) workplaces. In the experiment, eight operators cut off an octagonal shape from paper with and without wearing action cam. Even in the experiment without action CAM, all the participants" behaviors were recorded by a hidden camera.
Results: As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the Hawthorne effect was effective in reducing human errors, such as reducing the number of work procedure violation from 11 to 1 when the subject wore an action CAM.
Conclusion: This study verified that the number of violations of work procedure was reduced by inducing the Hawthorne effect by wearing an action CAM rather than a fixed type of CCTV. However, it should be preceded by establishing an accurate procedure for the work and educate the worker on the procedure.
Application: The results of this study can be used for human errors reduction management method for workers engaged in hazardous works.
