The purpose of this study is to lay the foundation for revitalizing pet insurance by analyzing the determinants of whether or not companion animal owners subscribe to pet insurance and the intention of non-subscribers.
To this end, a survey was conducted on 1,000 companion animal owners and the results of the survey were used for analysis. The binary logit model was used to analyze the determinants of whether or not to subscribe, and it was found that various demographic and sociological variables, the type and life stage of companion animals, the average monthly medical expenses, the number of companion animals, and owner’s perception were effected.
Analysis of the determinants of the intention to subscribe using an ordered logit model showed that gender, size of residential area, life stage of companion animals, and perception of the importance and necessity of pet insurance had an impact. Based on the analysis results, in order to revitalize companion animal insurance, various insurance product development and an organic cooperation system of related organizations should be established.
In addition, sufficient information and continuous publicity on companion animal insurance should be provided, and active induction measures for unregistered people should be prepared.
