    Marine heterotrophic bacteria (MHB) are the primary degraders of algal cell wall polysaccharides. Because MHB encode a diverse repertoire of carbohydrate active enzymes (CAZymes) to hydrolyze marine algal biomass, these microbes allow the flow of nutrients in marine food webs and are recognized as potential metabolic chassis in synthetic biology approach. Agar is a major polysaccharide of red algal cell wall. Agarases belong to various glycoside hydrolase (GH) families that have characteristic hydrolytic patterns, by which the depolymerization of agar can be divided into multiple steps (e.g. liquefaction and saccharification). Agarolytic MHB must have at least one of these agarases for agar depolymerization.
