Ever since the central pillar caves of Kucha were discovered in the twentieth century, there has been a great deal of debate surrounding their chronology, usage, and decoration, without any clear consensus having been reached on their exact function and use. Although central pillar caves are frequently described as places of worship, the descriptions often fail to fully address the complex issue of how religious spaces were designed and constructed to promote and facilitate spiritual experiences for those who used them. In this paper, the focus is on the physical space of central pillar caves and the way in which they were created to activate viewers and to provide a pathway towards a spiritual encounter. By exploring the physical features of these caves from the perspective of the observer, it is possible to gain a deeper understanding of their purpose and function, and to appreciate the intricate ways in which they were designed to facilitate religious experiences.
