There is an increasing demand for industrialized building system
to solve the serious shortage of housing in the country. Currently
main stream of domestic industrialized building system is the
precast concrete(PC) system. However, this was found to have some
problems in construction and quality of concrete. These can cause
the serious structural safety problems. Thus, to meet the needs of
domestic building industry there have been many efforts to develop
the better material, better building method. Among these steel
structure emerges as one of the best solutions due to its lightness,
strength and fast occupancy, etc. With all of these merits,
comestically steel structure was considered to be unsuitable for
the apartments. The purpose of this study is to investigate the
compatibility of multi-storey steel structured apartment with the
envelope of lightweight panels. It results in the 19% increase of
total construction cost over the conventional wall-slab type
apartment without considering the effect of reduction of
construction period in the steel structure.
