The purpose of this study is to set the basic research data and look into the historical mark of Jeong-dong area in the modern Korean history of architecture through the changes of foreigners’ land ownership of the area as the first section to accommodate foreigners in Seoul in the latter era of the Korean Empire.Unlike other early foreigners’ settlements in Korea, this area formed spontaneously due to the fact that Jeong-dong was the place for the embassies of the western countries those days. Accordingly as the increase in the number of foreigners came to Seoul, this area grew into the first residential area for westerners. The westerners who arrived in Seoul bought the pieces of land and houses for their purpose such as preaching religion, education.This paper is to define the process of foreigners’ settlement by looking closely into which part of Jeong-dong they occupied and the quantity of it as well as whom they bought it from and how much they paid for it. Also this is to study their ownership of land and buildings in Jeong-dong in the latter era of the Korean Empire.
