The royal ancestral shrine(宗廟) of Koryo Dynasty was built firstly at the time of the King SeongJong's reign. The Architectural form was basically determined in accordance with the norm of royal ancestral shrine in the Tang Dynasty. It consisted of the main building of nine bays, spacious court(廟庭) performing the ritual, three gates enclosing the entire space and the additional buildings supporting the ritual. Especially so-called ‘WorlDae(月臺)’, higher than the level of court and lower than that of main building’s platform, can be interpreted as the unique architectural installation invented by Koryo Dynasty. This architectural system was inherited to ChoSun Dynasty. The operating system of royal ancestral shrine was characterized by contriving to harmonize the Confucian doctrine with the special condition of Koryo Dynasty. The SeSil(世室) where the emblem of dead king was worshipped forever had been thoroughly limited by two rooms and the ritual rule that the range of accommodation should not be transcended beyond five emblems had been observed well without enlargement of main building. After all, The royal ancestral shrine of Koryo Dynasty may be understood as unique and exemplary one in Confucian culture.
