The research project for developing switching systems, called TDX project, has been started from 1978 to cope with drastically increasing demands for telecommunications services in Korea. Digital switching systems with distributed control have been targeted from its early stage. The outstanding outcomes of the project are two small-scale switching systems (TDX-1A and TDX-1B), a large-scale switching system (TDX-10), and their variants for various network environments. TDX-10 system has the capabilities necessary for any switching node on the network hierarchy of PSTN. Furthermore, it has been being refined in an evolutionary manner so that it can be eventually employed for integrated services digital networks, intelligent networks, and public land mobile networks. It is a worldwide thrust in the communication fields to move toward the realization of broadband communication networks which can effectively accommodate various services such as high-speed data and moving images as well as voice. In accordance with this trend, ETRI has set up along with related organizations a B-ISDN plan as one of nationwide technology enhancement programs. With successfully carrying it out, increasingly diverse communication services in Korea, existing or emerging, might be accommodated efficiently in an integrated broadband communication network, overcoming many limitations of current telecommunications networks in supporting them. A major part of the B-ISDN plan is for the development of ATM-based switching technologies, so called ATM project. We are scheduled to complete the development of a large-scale commercial ATM switching system by 1998. In this talk, we address the research activities on the TDX project and ATM project in more detail.
