In this paper, the core network architecture and associated protocol architecture for the IMT-2000 packet data service is proposed. The main purpose of IMT-2000 packet data service is to provide Internet access service for the mobile subscribers. Mobile data service features are briefly reviewed with GSM GPRS. In the design of core network architecture, network layers for circuit and packet switching service are separated to allow independent evolution since the requirement and technology evolution are quite different each other. Also, protocol architecture to support packet data service is designed so that it can keep compatibility with existing circuit switching service protocols and 2nd generation cellular system.
