    An architecture of Medium Access Control(MAC) protocol for 3G mobile system is proposed. It is designed based on the definition of UMTS-Terrestrial Radio Access(UTRA), and “Divide and Conquer” approach, which is composed of two different plane, two independent sub-layers and nine entities. The main purpose of MAC protocol is to support the adaptation functions to radio environments, and is to improve the demand capacity, battery-life and overhead traffic load by supporting the efficient management of radio resources to 3G multimedia services. This paper covers an overview of architecture, functions, frame formats, state transition diagram and implementation issues as major design issues of MAC protocol.
