No matter how small and trivial it is, an architectural work has to be a symbolical piece of plastic arts, which represents the tradition of a local culture as well as its age. In other words, it is a plastic rendering that combines the past with the present, looking forward to the future. Like other pieces of arts, a construction work is destined to be the product of its local history and its traditional forms.
Unfortunately, we were accustomed to think it best to destroy the old and build a new one, thanks to the process of rapid change. It is true that we get used to think modernization means westernization, which widely gets prevalent through our life-styles. Our architectural styles, which are the sum of our culture, cannot have been an exception in the westernizing process. This is really a shameful sore part that we have to admit candidly.
Therefore, in this juncture, it would be a great profit for us to look through the procedures of renovation of old buildings in Germany, which has been taking the leading part in Western architecture. It is recommendable, too, that we should look into the finished works in various angles including their historical functions and other significancies. This might be a way of repentance and compensation for our rash and shameful destruction so far.
For an exemplary case, the renovation of the facade and the entrance-hall in the governmental building of Muenster City is presented in this article to regard its historical functions, to see into the traditional aspects that continue steadily throughout the whole process of changes from the old to the modern times, and to search the best way of renovation concretely and specifically at the present moment.
It can be, however, presented in the light of reception aesthetic how an architectural work would be accepted and renovated variously according to its age's desires and changes. But, at least, this study can be expected to present a model concerning the renovation of old buildings, which starts to be discussed partially in Korea.
