This Thesis intends to clarify the complex aspects of the dual reactions which are 'the discriminated time experience of premodern and modern', and 'a longing for modern and anti-modern' in the latter part of 1930s novels. To elucidate the fluid, multi-leveled characters of modernity, I regard modernity as the aspects of modern experience or reaction, not as the Question of period classification.
In this thesis, the reactions to modernity revealed in the novels are classified as the ambivalent reaction which are a longing for the modern and its frustration, the anatomy of modernity and its new project, and the exclusion of modernity which reveals the resistance and indifference about it, through the intentionality towards premodern.
I look into the reaction of the subject to the modernity in the relationship between the subject and the objects. The case when the subject expresses a longing for the modern is defined as 'identification and the case when the subject follows the modern things and at the same time resists them is defined as 'disidentification' Also, the case when the subject expresses the repulsion against the modern is defined as 'counter-identification'.
Specially, this thesis examines the way how the text represents the female subject and femininity when the subject experiences the modernity and reacts to the modern. Because the figure of the female and the femininity can reveal well the ambivalent reaction to the modern in men and women. Through this examination, how the relationship between the subject and the feminin(ity) shows the project of the criticism about modernity can be revealed effectively.
Based on this analysis, the results of the examination about novels are as follows:
1) The novels of Park, Tae-Won and Lee Sang show the ambivalent reactions to modernity. The female subject of Park, Tae-Won's novels shows the ambivalent reaction like the desire and frustration of the modern. She gives in the logic of the modern, and can't realize the negativity of the modern. Through his wife, the male subject in the novels of Lee Sang gets to the voluntary experience of modernity, by the repetition of going out. But the subject reveals the internal yearning for common life in "Jijuhoisi" and in "The Wings", or he wants to be absorbed into common life in a series of reaction and realization. That is, the subject's reaction to the modern is converted from counter-identification to identification. In this process, the female is represented as the existence which shows the negativity of modern life through the male's vision.
2) The works of 'Dancheung-group', and Choi, Myoung-Ik analyze the attributes of the woman or snobbery which are the representation of the modern at that time. But after the subject recognizes that he is longing for the modern internally, he anatomizes and criticizes himself. That is, the subject takes the attitude of disidentification to the modern. In their novels, female functions as the negative sign when the male subject realizes the disillusionmnet of modern. Or she is nothing less than the exitence who stimulates the male's pursuit for the ideal value.
3) In the novels of Lee, Tae-Jun and Kim, Dong-Lee, the woman or the artist who is figured as the 'signified' of premodernity resists to the modern value or products. In Lee, Tae-Jun's novels, the subject internalizes the premodern life and considers that the premodern life and art is superior to the modern things. He counter-identifies himself with the modern. In his novels, female is identified with the premodern, and male subject sympathizes with her. And his aesthetic tendency inclines to the feminine aesthetics. So femininity functions as the central meaning which constructs the subject. In the novels of Kim, Dong-Lee, the man and woman establishes the subject by devoting himself/herself to the premodern things. In "portrait of Shaman" "HwangToGi", the subjects show the resistance to the modern by pursuing the traditional or ancient viewpoint. However, in two writer's novels, the new dichotomy of modern=maleness/premodern=femininity reproduces the modern thought. This has the possibility that female is excluded as the other or is dealt with the trope of nation for the writer's nationalistic purpose.
By the argument in this thesis, we can say that the novels in the latter part of 1930 specified the subjective consciousness such as the doubt and criticism about the modern(ity). In spite of that accomplishment, these novels didn't represent women's experience. So female exists as the Other. This means that the criticism of the modernity in these novels didn't consider the complex relationship between modernity and femininity.
