    We have previously shown that an initial manifestation of the nephrotoxicity induced by gasoline is an accumulation of a male rat-specific protein, a_2u-globulin, and hyalin (protein resorption) droplets in epithelial cells of the renal proximal convoluted tubules (PCT). The present studies were performed to determine whether a dose-response relationship exists for gasoline-induced accumulation of hyalin droplets and a_2u-globulin in the kidney. Male rats were treated with 0.0004-1.0 mL unleaded gasoline/kg orally for nine days. There was a dose-dependent elevation of renal a_2u-globulin content only in the range 0.04-1.0 mL/kg with no effect on hepatic a_2u-globulin at any dose. Doses less than 0.04 mL/kg did not have any effect on the renal content of a_2u-globulin. However, a significant (150% of control) increase in the a_2u-globulin content was seen after 0.04 mL/kg.
