Recently uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems are widely used in a variety of fields as highly reliable power sources. To cope with a service interruption that lasts for a considerably long time, the input side of a UPS is equipped with a synchronous generator in most cases as an emergency power supply. In practical operation, however, the following problems must be borne in mind.
(1) A synchronous generator tends to be affected by harmonic currents and in an extreme case, its rotor, etc. may suffer overheating. For this reason, a considerably large generator capacity is called for, as related later.
(2) Impedance of a synchronous generator is generally greater than that of a commercial power supply, thus easily giving rise to a voltage distortion due to the effect of harmonic currents.
(3) The power-factor improvement capacitors in the UPS system can give rise to resonance in conjunction with impedance of commercial power supply or the synchronous generator.
Since the impedance of the synchronous generator is comparatively large as mentioned above, the resonance frequency tends to move to a low-order side in the synchronous generator operation. In order to solve the above-mentioned problems, the authors have invest­igated the application of an active power filter (AF) to a UPS system and confirmed the effect by actually connecting it to a 750kVA UPS system, to be described below. This paper first describes the relationship between harmonic currents and the required capacity of a synchronous generator. This will suggest that the capacity of a synchronous generator can be greatly reduced by an AF even with a comparativeLy small capacity. This paper then outlines the UPS system and the AF used for this testing and described the result of field tests. Lastly the effect of the AF in restraining harmonic currents is described to reveal
the influence of circuit impedances.
