Recent development in talks on regional trade arrangements in Northeast Asia derives from the perspective of long-tenn benefits in bilateral or multilateral economic and industrial development in the region in the wake of the Asian crisis and the expansion of regionalism. However, since there still lie a lot of obstacles to launch a three-way free trade agreement among China, Japan and Korea in the near future, it is suggested to hold talks on the formation of a bilateral trade agreement between Japan and Korea as a stepping stone to conclude a three-way FTA. In the long tenn, it should be expanded to include China and the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) for regional co-prosperity. Like the NAFTA region, Northeast Asia stands to benefit from the introduction of a regional free trade area.
