Dangun nationalism means the consciousness and movements which persued the Korean's national integration upon the belief that Dangun(檀君) was the Korean's common ancestor. It contributed greatly to the glowth of Korean's national consciousness, to the independence movement, and national unification movement. During the period of Japanese colonial rule, it played a central role in arousing national sentiments to resist foreign encroachment and attain independence. In Korea's modem history, nationalism and modernization owe much to 'Dangun nationalism' for their growth and acceptance. Dangun nationalism became popular phenomena in the Hanmal(韓末) period and the Japanese colonial rule period, but its origins were long ago more than 700 years in Korean history. The remaining oldest books which recorded the legend of Dangun's founding first state were Samgukyusa(三國遺事) and Jewangungi(帝王韻紀). And they were written in 13th century when Koreans were under Mongolian aggression. From then Koreans thought that Dangun was their historical starting point and common ancestor. During Chosun dynasty notional sacrifices were performed to the memory of Dangun. And it was the Sunga(仙家) who leaded the cognition about Dangun. But Dangun nationalism was somewhat subdued by the flunkeyism toward China, and Confucian elites worshiped Kija(箕子) than Dangun. But in the late period of Chosun dynisty Dangun was resurrected as the Korean's common ancestor, and Dangun nationalism became popularized. This article discusses the aspects of Dangun nationalism in pre-modern period of Korea.
