The two villages, Jungchon and Shinchon, at Okgye in Gangneung area are consisted of 田-shaped houses in the pas.t But the dwelling space of the 田-shaped houses was changed to pursue the convenience and function by the modernization policy of the government authorities.
The purpose of this study is aimed at grasping how the spatial transformations of 田-shaped houses by the modernization and urbanization have been coped with and changed. The results are as follows.
The maintenance or removal of wall, the fuel change of heating and cooking, the leveling change of kitchen floor and so on made possible the standing life. And its plan was changed from two row room which was made by climatic confrontation to one row room by removal of wall lying between front room and back room, the fuel change of heating, the change of heating method and the heat insulating material. The roof material was changed from the traditional roof material such as a rice straw, wood tile and the bark of an acorn tree to the modern roof material such as a corrugated sheet iron or corrugated asbestos-cement sheet. And the structure of cement brick or block was attached to the traditional wood structure because of the easiness of execution.
