Of the numerous assertions, life pattern or custom in a specific area has long been believed that it has a significant impact on the layout of residential building. Currentstudy aimed to support the above claim by investigating the layout of 42residential houses of Choungsan Island which is located in the southern part of Korean peninsula. After assessing the impact of ordinary and unordinary activities of the island's residents on the space arrangement, author could draw following conclusions.
First, in most houses, Keun-che(main building) and Haengrang-che(sub building) are arranged ilL" type in site. The layout of Keun-chae, is unique in that kitchen was arranged at the center of the building. Second, Mari(wooden flood, in Keun-chae has dual-functions; i.e., the space has been served for both ceremony and storage. Third, such unique space arrangement and functional characteristics were attributable to the criterion of space allocation in a family and the location and preparation of shrine for family gods such as Sungju, Jowang, and Jihyangne. Above research outcomes confirmed that life pattern and religious custom of an area have critical impact on the space arrangement of residential building.
