In「Jaeseng」which was published in the middle of the 1920s, Lee Kwang-soo described the custom of early modern Chosun by the love relations among modern young people. The situation of Chosun in the historical upheaval such as changing into modern society and the failure of the Samil Independence .Movement was adopted as the main theme of 「Jaeseng」. So most characters in 「Jaeseng」c received or were receiving modem education, and also tried to accustom themselves to modem social consciousness and custom 1hey played piano, went to concerts, went out on a date with girl students, and attended church service. However, all the modem civilization which was mentioned in 「Jaeseng」 such as piano, concerts, love affair with girls, and church service was used just as a code for proving characters' modernity without being connected to their modem social consciousness. Here we see a strange reversion. It is not that modern social consciousness has created modern style naturally but that acquirement of modern civilization has represented modern social consciousness.
This ironical situation of modern Chosun got to be closed-up by Lee Kwang-soo in「Jaeseng」 through showing us those characters' lives filled with illusion. In case of the leading characters in 「Jaeseng」, Shin Bong-goo and Kim Soon-young, even though they could feel they loved each other, they failed to express their love to each other, and it brought a tragic end as Kim Soon-young committed suicide in the end. As one of the factors for this tragic ending, it can be presented that the social situation of Chosun in 1920s was not mature enough to allow the modern style of love relationship based on the equality of man and woman. Another factor we can point out along with that is the limitation of these two leading characters' consciousness. They tried to accept' love' just as the symbol of modernism without understanding the concepts of 'love' emphasizing spiritualization and mentalization, that is, without understanding of the equality of man and woman based on modern social consciousness fully.
The unstable state mentioned above of these two characters who pursue the illusion of modernity without internalizing it is found commonly in every character in 「Jaeseng」 and magnified to the features of Chosun that stepped into the dawn of modernization. Like Shin Bong-goo who led his own life to destruction as he was attached to philanthropism of Glristianiry, Kyung-hoon who committed a murder obsessed with an illusion of nationlaism without clearly recognizing what a nation is, and Kim Soon-young who unexpectedly changed her life into a mistress from a fighter of the Samil Independence Movement, every character in 「Jaeseng」 has something in common by pursuing illusion and falsehood. With that an era and a world of Chosun in its dawn of moderniry could be established in 「Jaeseng」.
