Applying the theory of the 'Phantasm' and 'transition' from Jacques Lacan's psychoanalysis, this thesis aims to discuss mutual relationship of the text structure and character's desire through analyzing subtext of A Dream of the Nine and Cloud. In the text, Dok-go min realizes his desire in imagination through phantasm. During this process, the subject reaches the archetype of his desire by going through transition and regression.
This text is constructed of Dok-go Min's narrative(A), Dr. Kim Yong-kil's narrative (B), and a narrative (C) from a pair of lovers who just saw cinema preview. The text meaning is reconstructed ‘ex post facto’ as the narrative (C) provides a reading condition for the narrative (A) and (B). In Every narrative, Dok-go Min and Suk are the key figures. They transfigure different aspects but together combine to construct every narrative.
In the narrative (A), Min in dual relation with Suk focuses on entering the Symbolic. The significance of ‘the Name-of-the-father’ makes a chain ‘(the U.S Army)’, ‘a high government official’ and takes a more concrete form. ‘The Name-of-the-father’ restrains Min's desire, and Min rejects going into the Symbolic. Dok-go Min uses phantasm to make a transition of his empathy and realizes his repressed desire in imagination.
In the narrative (B), Min and Suk's relation reveal the archetype of desire in dual relation of mother and son. Different from narrative (A), it is the mother who mourns her son(Min)'s death, and this in turn sublimates Min's desire.
In the narrative (C), Min and Suk's relation transform into a pair of lovers'. The Symbolic is portrayed as the world that could identify with 'ego-ideal'.
In proceeding the narrative (A) to (B) and (C), in relation to the desire of subject, love comes to completion through castration and sublimation of desire. This process corresponds with the setting as the private enclosed room changes to an open space. As a result, in connection with An Open Space, A Dream of the Nine and Cloud intensifies and makes concrete the meaning of "square" thus succeeds in showing the writer's intention coming over the boundaries of the reality.
