This study aims at exploring intertextuality between two novels with the same title of Hometown of Stars written by Kim, Mal-bong and Choi, In-ho respectively, based on the expectation horizon of romance novels. The result showed that customs of the popular novel genre, or formulas, play a role in exposing social and cultural context at the time through variations of familiarization and defamiliarization.
First of all, the two novels fully comply with the traditional practices of romance novels in structuring the plot. The development of love is based on a romantic plot with desire for perfect love, while narrative styles and narrators differ in both novels. Obstacles in love and romance of both stories put the procedures of romance at the forefront, but the two love stories vary according to the expectation horizon in creation and acceptance of the time.
In Kim, Mal-bong's Hometown of Stars, characters' love is confronted with obstacles, because their perceptions toward feudal class system serve as residual values, conflicting with modern point of view standing for free love. Moreover, love among the characters show punitive moral collisions, coupled with left versus right ideological conflicts. On the contrary, in Choi, In-ho's Hometown of Stars, economic conditions of characters play a key part for their love, which suggests a possibility of new class order at the time. Female characters' virginity serve as a defining variant in the characters' relationship.
Next, the two novels have the issue of prostitutes in common, which displays intertextuality by putting the distinct love and social and cultural conditions of the time into context. First, the relatively high importance of prostitutes' love stories in both novels is closely related to the social atmosphere. When the novels were published, the number of prostitutes soared. Second, prostitutes' love or their personal characteristics are not easily accepted by male characters and prostitutes are just functioning as sexual tools of men or objectives representing otherness.
Here, both Kim, Mal-bong’s commitment as a writer, who promoted the Licensed Prostitution Abolition Movement after the Liberalization in order to improve the social treatment of prostitutes, and Choi, In-ho's consciousness toward gloomy love of urban people in modern industrial society are well expressed. Third, it is described that prostitutes can be treated as human beings or their status can be upgraded to holy virgins only through their deaths or great sacrifice close to death. This shows writers’ unique styles of putting romantic take-off and romantic sublimation into context of the Korean society where patriarchal ideology is still prevalent.
Lastly, the intertextuality of the two Hometown of Stars can be found in expectation horizon of creation and acceptance. Writers tend to use formulas of melodrama as a base of familiar expectation horizon, while they introduce new strategies and narrative styles into text in line with changing expectation horizons in the 1950's and the 1970's respectively. In particular, the gender difference of the two writers resulted in a stark contrast in dealing with the ending of romance novels. The female writer Kim, Mal-bong concluded the story in a romantic and ideal way that most of women dream about. On the other hand, Choi, In-ho vividly described the procedure where women’s ideal love is dampened in a real world and his fantastic and romantic ending skillfully covers up a society based on a patriarchal ideology and men’s hypocrisy. The varying expectation horizons by gender difference seem to help readers to enjoy defamiliarization to the fullest by calling for new styles in reading romance novels.
