The cell components of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Water Electrolyzer (PEMWE) including electro catalyst, current collector and PEM were optimized in a single cell PEMWE system. IrO₂as an effective anode catalyst was prepared by Adams fusion method calcined at various temperatures from 400 to 700℃. Among the prepared anode catalysts IrO₂calcined at 500℃ showed the best water electrolysis performance, implying that electro catalytic activity and electrical conductivity of IrO₂were optimized at the catalyst. As a current collector of PEMWE cell, various shaped metals including Ti expanded metal, Ni foam and Pt coated Ti expanded metal were employed and showed that Pt coated Ti expanded metal was the most effective in water electrolysis. Among the polymer electrolyte membranes, Nation 112 revealed the lowest over-potential for water electrolysis, whereas the mechanical strength of the PEM was low. Consequently, the optimized PEMWE system employing IrO₂_500, Pt coated Ti expanded metal and Nation 112 as anode catalyst, current collector and PEM, respectively, showed cell voltage of 1.7V at 800 mA/㎠.
