The benefits of natural light go beyond simple energy savings. It also has an importance in maintaining sustainable human life both in physical and psychological dimensions. However, in our time, due to congested high-rise buildings, the products of rapid urbanization, it is increasingly difficult to penetrate natural light deep into the interior space. As a sustainable solution to this problem, sunlighting systems have been studied, developed, and applied on modern buildings. The mirror sunlighting system developed in this study consists of a 90cm (in diameter) clear top dome, a base, two reflecting mirrors, a sun tracking control system, and an activator.
In order to protect the first reflecting mirror and maintain a high level of sunlight transmittance, the roof dome was made of acryl coated with UV protection substance. In addition to this, with the purpose of preventing the inside of the roof dome from being over-heated, an exhaust fan was attached to the side of the base. The first reflecting mirror is planned to track the sun, collect sunlight, and uphold a high performance of reflectance and permanence. In order to do so, it is designed as a circular-shaped aluminized glass (75㎝ in diameter and 2.5㎜ in thickness). While, the second reflecting mirror, which is planned to receive the reflected sunlight of the first mirror, is shaped either flat or concave mirror for enhancing adaptability.
To evaluate the effectiveness of the sunlighting system, it was placed on the roof of four-story building. The room for the evaluation was on the first floor (7.5m X 5.5m) and it was faced on the north in the building. The experiments were conducted under a clear sky.
It is proved that the sun lighting system can be applicable to various building types, and the more detailed results were discussed. Moreover, its durability was validated by four-month field experiments.
