The present study examines the significance of cultural contents in the present day under the assumption that the definition and categorization of art have changed over time.
Modern art has been constantly incorporating technological and media factors. With the development of digital technology, computers are used in the creation and appreciation of works of art and one of the most prominent phenomena in the field of modern art is interactivity. With the introduction of digital technology into the area of art, however, the identity of artists and their works are being questioned, and the new kinds of art are not possible to be evaluated with the existing definitions or categories.
In this sense, it is important to note that the definitions or categories of art are not absolute terms, but the products of the period or systems. Therefore, our focus on art should be directed towards the changes of the times and society, not towards the old definitions and categories. Digital technology and new media are creating new cultures that haven't been seen in the human history. And the resulting new cultural models are cultural contents.
This study claims that the new cultural contents will change art into a positive form integrating with life, by uniting different genres of art, breaking the walls between work and play, reality and fantasy, and popular and high-class cultures, and by overcoming the conflicts between technology and art, and life and art.
We expect that the cultural contents based on digital technology will incorporate separate genres of art in the form of multimedia, and that it will play the role in our lives that has been played by art.
