This study discusses the phonological, syntactic, and lexical issues of Lee Mun-Gu's novel language. His novels use the dialect of Boryeong, Chungnam Province and form a very distinctive style with which readers are unfamiliar.
The palatalization and tensification of the first part of the words in Lee Mun-Gu's novels are almost the same as in those of Chungnam dialect, but he uses a more vivid and realistic dialect than senior speakers who live in the Boryeong area. This can be understood as his intention to intensify the language of the area more innovatively, so that he can make the characters' personality more specific. In addition, the umlaut is a variation of Boryeong dialect, and it has been influenced by the interference of other dialects.
'-sair,' which is a Chungnam dialect auxiliary, has a syntactic limitation that it goes after '-illang', which shows the topic. In Lee Mun-Gu's novels, however, he uniquely composes the syntactic structure of '-eun/neun sara.' Moreover, the auxiliary words '-hallae' and '-hanci' have the same syntactic meaning as that of '-kkaci, -jocha, -maceo.' Nevertheless, in the conversation of Lee Mun-Gu's novels, '-hallae'is largely used while '-hanci' is hardly used.
In Lee Mun-Gu's novels, he uses a great deal of Chungnam dialect, symbolic words, slang, and idiolect coined by Lee Mun-Gu himself. He makes the description of the characters more realistic with rich vocabulary, and this linguistic experiment has established his own 'stylistic area.'
