One of the most representative examples relating to the formation process of ancient nations is the foundation myth. In the case of the history of Baekje, an important material in formulating the establishment period and unraveling issues in power relations is the foundation myth.
This study examines the formation of and developmental process regarding the foundation myth of Baekje by focusing on the following research question: Could the present form of the foundation myth of Baekje exist if mythological aspects were omitted and changes according to historical situations did not arise in the process of transmitting the myth?
The first stage investigated is the period when Biryu was inserted as Onj o's young brother. When examining the foundation myth of Baekje in Samg uksagi, the original representation was in an annotation so that the founder's lineage was traced through Gutae-Biryu. The initial form of the foundation myth of Baekje closely resembled the founder's lineage of Biryu, and upon the combining of the founder's lineage of Onjo and Michouhol the two fede rations became one. In order to solidify Biryu's power, it appears that Biryu was portrayed as an older brother in a brother relationsihp in the myth. The lineage of the founder Biryu is speculated to have been formed during the t imes of King Go-ie.
The second stage examined is the formation process of the foundation m yth concerning Dongmyong-Onjo. In the process of securing a system, King Geunchogo of the Onjo lineage transmission of the power from Haeburyu-G utae of the Biryu founder's lineage to the Onjo line was not possible, So it appears that the identity of the Onjo lineage is found in Dongmyong, the fi rst in the Buyo founder's lineage.
The third stage investigated is the stablization process of the image of the present in which the Baekje foundation myth stemming from Dongmyong-Onjo transformed into Jumong-Onjo. Both Onjo and Biryu were of the Buyo federation which was seen in the lineage of Buyo in the Baekje foundation myth. However, after the fall of Baekje, in the process of unification of Shilla, it was recognized that Dongmyong of Buyo was understood as Jumong of Koguryu. So it can be speculated that the lineage of Jumong-Onjo in Samguksagi coincides with the Baekje foundation myth.
In order to overcome the limitations of sparse materials, this study has attempted to provide interpretation and speculations concerning the foundation myth of Baekje. However, a caveat is that this kind of historical pondering may lack logic and may have distorted the original intentions of the Baekje foundation myth. In examining the development and transformation process of the Baekje foundation myth, the same weight should be placed on the driving forces of the developmental process of the myth as is on its present state.
