A set of thermodynamic properties of R-32 is calculated and its refrigeration performance is evaluated. The advantages of R-32 are as follows. (1) The refrigeration effect of R-32 is superior to that of R-22 (2) The volumetric capacity of R-32 is superior to that of R-22. (3) The average two-phase heat transfer coefficient of R-32 is about 20-40% higher than that of R-22. The disadvantages of R-32 are as follows (1) The vapor pressure of R-32 is about 50% higher than that of R-22. So the condensing unit for R-32 should be reinforced to withstand the high pressure and it must require more compressor power. The COP of the R-32 system is 10-30% lower than that of R-22 (2) The compressor discharging temperature rises as high as 130-150℃. It can result in mechanical failure of the compressor due to the breakdown of lubricant.
It is recommended that the current compressors be redesigned to meet high pressure and to cool the discharging gas of high temperature in order to use R-32 as a pure alternative refrigerant. Also it is suggested that refrigerant mixtures be developed in the direction of keeping the advantage of the volumetric capacity and the refrigeration effect and of reducing the high vapor pressure.
