This article focuses on the analogies and differences between spiritual changes and psychological changes. The writer attempts to understand the concepts found in Ephesians 4:22-24, such as 'old self,' 'new self,' 'put off' and 'put off' with exegesis biblically and theologically. The verbs of 'put off' and 'put on' are understood as past, redemptive event, present, sanctification process, and future, eschatological event. 'Putting off' old self is metaphorically related to circumcision and baptism. The process of 'putting off' old self and 'putting on' new self is seen as sanctification process in life journey as an individual and as a church community.
Psychological growth is seen as necessary for spiritual growth, but as 'not enough.' Psychological growth is possible without spiritual growth. However, spiritual development without psychological development is seen as 'pseudo-spiritual' development. Analogies between sanctification and psychotherapy includes: disclosure of self, seeing and hearing what has been unconscious or unaware, grieving, suffering, birthing of new self, backsliding, and putting off old defense mechanisms and putting on new defense mechanisms. The writer argues that pastoral counselors must be aware of not only intrapersonal and interpersonal dynamics but also transpersonal, spiritual dynamics in counseling. It is also argued that pastoral or Christian counselors should not be limited in their perspectives to the 'transitory' object relation of their clients in this world but should encourage them to continue to renew, reform, and sanctify themselves in their Christian journey.
