The two-phase closed thermosyphon with a binary mixture, ethanol and water whose boiling points are different from each other, may show a superior engineering quality over that of single fluid Operating characteristics of thermosyphon with a stable water/ethanol mixture, which has not shown any mixing gap, was experimentally investigated.
Also, the visualization study of the device has been carried out for the understanding flow pattern and mechanism of the heat transfer for the thermosyphon, with a annular pyrex glass thermosyphon with heating and cooling jacket for the direct observation.
Experiments on the thermosyphon with a binary mixture has been carried out for operating characteristics of start-up, steady state, inclination, and heat transfer limitation.
It was found that the thermosyphon with a pure fluid operated through overheating of liquid pool and intermittent periodic geyser boiling. Periodic local dry-out in the upper edge of the evaporator was observed with increasing inclination angle.
On the other hand, for binary mixtures, overheating of liquid pool was found to be considerably reduced. For high heat flux conditions, the thermosyphon showed stable characteristics, and overheating of the liquid pool and intermittent periodic geyser boiling was not observed. Different from pure fluid cases, for binary mixtures, dry-out phenomenon did not occur continuously on the upper edge of the evaporator with inclinations, because of an effects of adhesion between ethanol component and surface.
