The capacity of an air-to-air heat pump decreased as the outdoor temperature raised in the cooling mode operation. Capacity control of a heat pump system with respect to the outdoor temperature is required to provide adequate capacity at high condensing temperature condition on the heating mode operation of the system. An experimental study was performed on the characteristics of an inverter driven water-to-water heat pump system with a variation of compressor frequency and expansion device. The frequency was altered from 30㎐ to 75㎐. Capillary tubes (700, 800, 900㎜), thermostatic expansion valve(TXV), and electronic expansion valve(EEV) were used as an expansion device and their results were compared. Performance of the system was measured at various condenser (30, 34, 39℃) and evaporator (26.1, 28.5℃) inlet temperatures of the secondary fluids. The system with longer capillary tube had higher increase of capacity and coefficient of performance(COP) at high secondary fluid temperature entering the condenser. TXV and EEV system have better performances beyond design conditions. As the frequency raised, the capacity and COP of the system with shorter capillary tube increased more than that with longer capillary tube, and capacity of the TXV system and EEV system were enhanced more than that of the capillary tube system.
