Deposition characteristics of inhaled particles in the airways were studied experimentally using Y-shaped tube models with varying branching angles and pattern. Monodispersed oleic acid particles (3, 5 and 7 ㎛ dia.) tagged with uranine were used as test aerosols and sampled through the model tube at a mean Reynolds number (Re) of 679-5548 with constant and cyclic flows. Sampling was made both in the bifurcating and converging flow direction to simulate the inspiratory and expiratory flow. It was found that deposition occurs mainly at the bifurcation ridge with bifurcating flows and near the flow junction with converging flows for both constant and cyclic flow sampling regardless of sampling flow pattern. Deposition efficiency (DE) increased monotonically with increasing stk for both flow directions. However, DE was higher with cyclic than with constant flows at the same mean flow rate. Effect of branching angle was small with bifurcating flow but quite significant with converging flow. The results suggest that particle deposition in the flow regime used is mainly due to inertial impaction and that with converging flow this may be associated with secondary vortex flows which are formed near the flow junction.
