Twin-fluid nozzles with high performance and simple structure have been widely used in combustors, such as a spark ignition engine, a gas turbine, a rocket engine and a industrial furnace. The atomization characteristics - the drop size, the drop velocity, the number density and the mass flux, become increasingly important in designing of the combustor and in testifying numerical simulation of flow in the combustor. The purposes of this study are to investigate the swirling airblast atomization characteristics of a twin-fluid nozzle and to offer the data for combustor design and the numerical simulation of a spray. Water and air were used as working fluids in this experiment. The mass flow rate of water was a 0.03 ㎏/min, and the air flow rate was controlled to have the air/liquid mass ratios from 1 to 6. Spatial drop diameters were measured by a Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer(PDPA). The mean diameter, size distribution and uniformity of the drops were analyzed with the variation of mass ratios. The results show that the SMD decreases with mass ratio, and the larger drops diffuse wider. The maximum SMD was found to be in the boundary region of the spray and the drops had wide ranges of size.
