Korean modern commemoration culture has been formed under/against Japanese colonialism. Although the Japanese memorial days and monuments were abolished and new memorial days were created after the establishment of Korean government, the forms of the memorial space and rituals had been unconsciously succeeded. The Korean War and the regime competition between the South and the North also played pivotal roles in creating memorial culture. The monuments commemorating the war memories were built earlier than the symbolic monuments of nation-state building commemorating the liberation or independence. Authoritarian and male-dominating elements have been engraved in public monuments. The process of symbolic deconstruction of colonial residue was bound to be accompanied with the nationalistic mobilization and the space representing the independence and liberation started to be paired with history education. The political democratization with the memory struggles offered few of opportunities for the critical reflection on the past memorial culture.
The demands for rewriting the past after the consolidation of democratization call for transformation of Korean memorial culture. Recently Korea's memory struggles are broadening their perspectives towards the historical horizon of East Asia. There are however many things to be done in Korean memorial culture. Korean experiences of memories and memorials should be theoretically articulated, and the alternative memorial space for democracy and democratic movements should be created. Finally history education should be reformed with the critical reflection on the memorial culture of the past.
