Lacan takes issue with the prevailing contention that language swallows up or exhausts reality. There is always a certain remnant, a certain leftover escaping the circle of differential systems of representations. This non-signifying Other, the Real, exists as sedimentations within language which resist symbolization, remaining obscurely and intransigently material. Neither simply foreign to the symbolic order nor fully within it, the Real is extimate. But the overcoming of the symbolic order by the Real does not lend to a simple, ineffable exteriority that would be transcendent and without relation. It is this exteriority that engages in the symbolic order and sets into play representational thought. But since the loss of the Real is the condition of any knowledge of objective reality, the Real itself cannot become an object of knowledge.
Derrida's recent works on the gift are grounded clearly on his discreet understanding of the Other's otherness. A gift must be unmotivated and unconditional. But as soon as I give a gift, I am at once involved in symbolic exchange. As soon as I receive a gift as such, recognize it as gift, I am engaged in the circle of exchange insofar as this gift entails an obligation to make repayment. It follows as a corollary of this fact that the gift occurs only when it does not appear as such. Gift-event as the Other disrupts the purity of the gift but is itself hidden. Paradoxically, gift-event becomes gift by losing itself; the withdrawal of the gift-event is a pre-condition for the exchange of the gift.
