Architectural culture has been developed by the natural conditions as climate, topography, producing materials and human conditions as politics, society, religious, nationality, etc. And according to the cultual transferences, it gradually gets the relationships, and the universalities.
In this study, I illuminated the acceptance of Catholic church architecture from not only the narrowly confined perspectives such as ‘the acceptance of foreign architectural style,’ but also the perspectives as ‘the change of consciousness on architecture,’ ‘the conflict and fusion with Korean traditional architecture,’ and ‘architectural producing technology.’
Major contents of the study are ① the forming process and characteristics of modern architecture in Korea, ② the characteristics of Catholic church architecture, ③ the influence on Korean modern architecture.
The Results of this study are as follows :
First, Western architectural style was accepted as comparatively pure form through Catholic church architecture.
Second, the consciousness on interior spacial form has begun to bud.
Third, inner space has been enlarged and mostly single building has been built instead of grouping.
Forth, the concepts of arrangement and location of buildings have been changed.
Fifth, western timber structure(truss) was accepted and fused with traditional timber structure(post-lintel structure).
Sixth, various kinds of building materials and technology have been introduced.
Seventh, western ritual furniture and sacred art have been accepted.
Eighth, architectural modernism has been accepted and spreaded.
