Collective housing design was one of the most important themes in modern architecture. Although rationalism in architecture contributed much to the development of collective housing, instrumentalised rationality tended to reduce human dwelling to mere results of architects' own aesthetics or scientific calculation. As an antithesis, this study suggests the design of Alvar Aalto (1898-1976), who has been regarded as a representative figure of a different stream in modern architecture. The transitional process of his collective housing projects is divided into four phases here, of which course is considered that of getting 'individuality within collectivity'. That is to say, his collective housing of the latter phases has the value of a single-family house through the heightened identity of each unit, the spatial quality and the sincere response to the given context. By analysing his projects, this study aims at showing the different tradition of modern collective housing design, which indicates another possibility of contemporary housing design, and also at illustrating Aalto's design development in his life's career.
