The paper is for an intense study on the iconography of “the Adoration of the Lamb”, the lower central panel of the Ghent Altarpiece, which was painted by Flemish artists, Jan and Hubert van Eyck in the 15th century.
Questioning why and how the strong vertical axis, generally known and has served as a basic composition for the Baptism in the traditional Christian Art, could be introduced in “the Adoration of the Lamb”, where one could not find out any direct correlations between them, we will examine several formal characteristics of “the Adoration of the Lamb” and their functions in making out its iconographic meanings.
Both formal and iconographical research and historical approach will be adopted for settling the raised questions. First, iconographic meanings of the pivotal main motives of “the Adoration of the Lamb” - the Lamb of God(Agnus Dei), Fountain of life(Fons Vitae), Holy Ghost, and Deesis - alongside the expanded vertical line from lower to upper panels inside the Altarpiece, will be studied with reference to the Christian theology. Then, historical developments of these motives will be pursued through the western art history for the purpose of clarifying how they could finally get taken by van Eyck brothers in “the Adoration of the Lamb”, It will provide some understandings about how the motives above create theological meanings as a whole through influences of typical vertical composition of the Baptism.
