There are the condition of the civilization and the culture in the archetype of the concept 'Gong-Ye (korean meaning craft)'. The organic relation between the term and the meaning that accompanies the period and the cultural environments comes in contact with cultural change. So we can find the clues that trace out modem organization of the art world and the relation with the industry in the concept 'Gong-Ye' that used before and after 1900s. The examples of the term 'Gong-Ye' had included not only the boundaries of the premodern and the modern, the traditional handicraft and modern industry, and the manufacturing industry and the art, but also the course that develops from industry to art.
The recognition of the value of the 'Gong-Ye' had shifted from the vision of civilization to the vision of culture. Because the concept is following the recognition of the concept, the first motivation is the eagerness of the development to the better civilization. The second is that the term 'Gong-Ye' imported from Japan. Japan had the dichotomy of the material and the spirit, the applied art and the fine art. They believed that the spirit predominate the material, so the fine art predominate the applied art. The reason why the 'Gong-Ye' include the recognition of the both, the civilization and the culture, is that the industrial production and the artistic creation are mixed in the craft.
In summarize this, the 'Gong-Ye' which was imported from Japan in 1881, is recognized the industrial thing because of the task of the material development. In the early 1900s, there were industrialization in society and modernization in art, so the new examples of the 'Gong-Ye' is raised. The division between handicraft and industrial product had caused to the concept of art craft. The moment of the shift from the vision of civilization to the vision of culture in the recognition of the 'Gong-Ye' was based on Royal Art and Craft Workshop (MisulpumJejakso) and Institute of Technical Craft (GongupJeonseupso) which was founded in 1908. Royal Art and Craft Workshop produced high grade craft goods by the name of the art. Institute of Technical Craft that was based technological system, fostered young technological expertises. These series of phenomenon was due to the structural change of the art world and industrial world. Thai's why the articles that emphasized the 'art conception' rather than technology was flowing about 1908. So the traditional hierarchy from confucianism was regulated. 'The product of the heaven' was changed the product of human.
Because the line of border between industry and art craft was becoming destined, 'Gong-Ye' was included in Chosun Arts Competetion as one genre of the fine arts. After the liberation from Japan, craft was included in the major of some universities. Finally the craft was enthroned as the art. But this change resulted in confusion of the identity of craft, which originally signified the function and the plastic beauty. Accompanying this change of the concept 'Gong-Ye', the phenomenon that craftsman was given japanese job tide was general, even today. So we have to reconsider this distorted phenomenon.
