In this study, I investigated the Aspects of Correspondence in three Korean Tonal Systems, Middle Korean, modern Hamkyeong dialect and Kyeongbuk dialect. And I tried to show that there is a strict correspondence relationship in underlying tonal patterns of three Tonal Systems.
Middle Korean has three tonemes(high tone, low tone, rising tone) and three tonal patterns(pyeongseong-pattern, geoseonge-pattern, sangseong-pattern), and one actualization rule of tonal pattern called ‘rules of rhythm(律動規則)’. Hambuk dialect, has two tonemes(high tone, low tone) and two tonal patterns(high tone-pattern, low tone-pattern), and two actualization rule of high tone-pattern. In Hambuk dialect, rising tone has merged into high tone. Kyeongbuk dialect has three tonemes and three tonal patterns and threee actualization rule of tonal pattern. Middle Korean and Hambuk dialect have same high-low opposition system, but Kyeongbuk dialect have reverse system to them.
