This paper, with Lee Tae-jun’s novels as its object, investigates what properties the national language had while it was subject to the colonial policies of language by Japanese imperialism. First of all, we have investigated the colonial policies of language reflected in Lee’s novels. In the Story of Paradise Lost, a situation is depicted, in which the Japanese language as a language for learning is forced upon students. Excluded from having the status of language for learning, the Korean language was deprived of chances to be used in interpreting the civilizations flowing into Korea at that time. In Paegangraeng, a situation is depicted, where the Korean language is ousted from the system as the subject of Korean has become an elective course. Next, we have compared Japanese and Korean spoken by those speakers of Japanese who appear in Lee Tae-jun’s novels. The speakers of Japanese in his novels show a poor command of Japanese, and Lee does not show the Japanese language spoken by such speakers in a complete form in his novels. The language spoken by the characters in Lee’s novels represents "Korea-like things,"but has limitation in that it just shows a "stuffed tradition."
